Mermaid birthday cupcakes and stand

Mermaid Birthday

Last year my son had asked for a mermaid birthday. It was the first birthday he’s had where he actually could ask for a theme. Since my husband is military and we didn’t have family near it was just the three of us so there was no need to display a ton of food but I still wanted to make it special with fun decorations.

Mermaid Birthday Food

For a special mermaid birthday breakfast we made colorful waffles using neon food dye. To make the cupcakes we used food dye in vanilla frosting and swirled it in the middle of the cupcakes. We also used fun mermaid sprinkles and created mermaid tails and shells using silicone molds and melting chocolates. I created the cupcake stand using a plastic blue plate, a blue plastic bowl and some shells, all from dollar tree.

Mermaid Birthday Decorations

Hallway

I love decorating the hallway for my son’s birthday. I want him to walk out in the morning feeling like he’s transported into an imaginary land. Since he asked for a mermaid birthday, I tried to make it feel like we were underwater. I used green streamers to create sea weed and fish cutouts with poster putty to attach them to the walls. Fish streamers hung from the ceiling (link here). I also blew up white balloons to be the bubbles.

Dining room

In the dining room we created a mermaid hangout corner using dollar tree mermaid dolls and wooden mermaid cutouts.

I wanted it to feel like we were in the ocean with the mermaids so I used cellophane (link here) on the windows and decorated them with fish cutouts (link here) I purchased on Amazon, along with some dollar tree floral and gift bows. I set these up to look like coral.

We also used shower caps, shower poofs, and balloon strings to create jellyfish which we hung from the ceiling and against the walls.

Mermaid Birthday Games

We created a treasure map that led to his big present. This was a huge hit. We hid the present in the attic and used the back of some brown wrapping paper as the actual map. My husband then drew out a map of our house with an x marks the spot where the attic is. He burned the edges to create an old worn look.

One of the games we played was a fish race. Using dollar tree fish blow ups we raced against each other trying to keep the fish between our legs. This was a lot of fun and budget friendly. All you need are two players, a judge, and two fish inflatables.

Lastly we had pin the tail on the mermaid (link here). A classic birthday game with a mermaid twist. You could definitely make your own using a little creativity!
