Family Life, Fun

Family Movie Night – Slumber Party Theme

Family movie nights can be a lot of fun. I remember my mom taking to me to Blockbuster on Fridays and being allowed to pick out a new movie to watch. Since today our movies are streamed, our kids won’t get to have that same excitement, but by putting in a little extra effort to create special family movie nights we can form exciting new memories. Plus it’s a great way to bond.  Here’s how I created our slumber party themed family movie night:

Family movie night supplies:

  • Projector-We purchased ours through Amazon and have had it about a year now.

I also want to note you’ll want a thumb drive with movies on it or a Roku to stream what you are going to watch. Speakers are a really nice touch too.

  • Projector screen– I purchased mine on Amazon for less than $30 and like the projector it has had a lot of use. If you have a blank wall it is not necessary to have a screen but it does help to crisp the picture. You could use a sheet instead but I like the screen because it’s easy to hang and the perfect size. I’ve used it both outside and inside.
  • Comfy beds-We have a pull out sofa so I took the bed from that and tossed it on the floor with our pillows and blankets. I brought in my son’s mattress for extra sleeping space. You could use a blow up mattress or take the cushions off your couch. Just use what you have.
  • Snacks– We had some of the boxed candies to choose from, popcorn, chips, and almonds. Some healthier options you could set up are grapes, cut watermelon, cut pineapple, celery sticks, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, various nuts, or make your own treat.

I also went to my local thrift store looking for a popcorn machine and ended up finding a snow cone machine instead. It was only $8 and looked unused, so don’t forget to shop your local thrift stores! I made my own syrups and we enjoyed special “volcano” snow cones.

  • Stand– A place to put the snacks and decorate.
  • Lighting– I used string lightsthat I already had. I have a little obsession with lights so I keep a various collection.

Here is the setup:

  • First I found a spot to put up the screen. I chose to hang it in front of our curtains in our family room.
  • Set up your projector. I didn’t have a great spot but luckily our projector came with a little stand so I used that to set it on top our sofa and it ended up working great. I plugged up the thumb drive that we had with our movie on it and also plugged in our speakers. I turned the lights off and made sure my projector was hitting a good spot on the screen.
  • Next you’ll want to clean up. I vacuumed my space and cleaned out the toys. I used a Febreze plug in with a scent our family enjoys. I also cleaned the snow cone machine.
  • Setup your stand and snacks. I shopped my home for a stand to use to put our snacks on. Then I created the snow cone syrups we used. I also prepared our snacks using food organizers I already had. I placed everything on the stand and then strung my fairy lights around them.
  • Set up the sleeping area. I pulled the sofa mattress out and brought my sons mattress into the room.
  • Movie choices. We watched the original Jurassic park. You could have your family choose a few movies and write them down then stick them in a bowl and draw to decide what to watch or you could have a family vote.

Lastly:

Now it’s time to get comfy, grab your snacks and turn the lights off. You could involve your kids in the process. Have them help clean up and help make snacks, even set up.  My son helped clean out his toys, bring the snacks out and set the lights up. Enjoy your slumber party themed family movie night!
