Trick or Treat – Hide and Seek

I loooooove Halloween, but when my son become old enough to trick or treat, the pandemic rolled through. I still really wanted him to experience all the fun celebrations and create those happy memories.  Having children really makes you recall parts of your own childhood.  I remember one year my parents couldn’t take my cousins and I trick or treating so they tried to make it special at the house. Using this special memory and tweaking it a bit we celebrated with this fun Halloween game, trick or treat- hide and seek.

Trick or Treat Memories

This was my absolute favorite Halloween memory as a child. My parents and grandma dressed up and hid in different rooms of our house. The lights were off and my cousins and I would have to find them. When we did we’d say trick or treat and we’d get a piece of candy. Even though we couldn’t go trick or treating traditionally, they kept it alive by being creative and doing it at home.

Trick or Treat Game with Young Kids

We have done this every year since he could walk around. His first year we took turns hiding. We made it less spooky by playing kids Halloween music on the T.V. Also, one of us would take turns walking around with him to try to find the other parent. The person hiding had a glow stick to make it easier for him to find us. When he would find us he’d say trick or treat and we’d pull a treat from our bucket and put it into his.

Getting Creative

Last year we decided to set it up in our back yard and do things a little differently. I created haunted eyes out of toilet paper rolls and lights I found on Amazon. We placed them everywhere in the yard to give a spooky ambiance. I also pulled out the fog machine (this one looks cool) and strobe lights (this one comes with a remote). We strung up spider webs to add to the overall creepiness. Using white balloons and black construction paper, we created ghosts which we hid around the yard. Inside each ghost I added the same light I used for the glowing eyes. I also added a piece of candy. We set up Halloween sounds and I walked around with him while my husband hid. My son got to find the ghosts as well as look for my husband, if my husband didn’t jump scare us first.

The fun thing about this is you can be as creative as you like with it. Go all out, and create a haunted scene or, with less fuss, just add some creepy music and low lighting for ambiance. What I also like about this is you have control with what treats your child gets, so if you have a child with allergies you can meet their needs. What’s your favorite childhood Halloween memory?
